Built in 1553 by Maharaja Bahadur Singh within the towering deodar forests of Dhungri, Hadimba Temple is the most iconic wooden shrine in Manali. Dedicated to Goddess Hidimbi, wife of the Pandava prince Bhima from the Mahabharata epic, this four tiered wooden pagoda stands around a sacred natural rock cave where the deity performed penance.
The temple architecture features intricately carved wooden doorways displaying folk motifs, mythological figures, floral reliefs, and animal horns. Instead of a traditional stone idol, the sanctum houses the footprints of the goddess carved into natural rock. A brass conical canopy caps the topmost tier, rising 24 meters above the moss covered forest floor.
Surrounding deodar groves offer shaded walking trails where travelers pose with local Angora rabbits and traditional Kullu dress photographers. Just seventy meters away sits the wooden shrine of Ghatotkacha, the warrior son of Hidimbi and Bhima.
