Bijli Mahadev Temple is a mystical ancient Shiva temple situated at 8,060 feet (2,460 metres) atop Mathan Hill overlooking the confluence of the Beas and Parvati rivers in Kullu valley near Manali. Known for its periodic lightning miracles in Himachal Pradesh, it is a renowned spiritual trekking peak.
A 60 foot tall wooden flagpole (dhwaja) atop the temple attracts celestial lightning strikes during fierce storms. According to legend, Lord Shiva absorbs the destructive lightning to save the valley populace. The sanctum Shiva Lingam shatters into pieces from the strike, which temple priests meticulously reconstruct using homemade butter (makhan) and sattoo paste.
Truth is, the 3 km uphill trek from Chansari village takes hikers through fragrant deodar forests and open meadow plateaus. From the temple ridge, travelers soak in 360 degree panoramas of Kullu and Manikaran valleys glowing in the morning sun.
