Lohagad Fort (the legendary 3,389 foot stone fortress known as the Iron Fort and Maratha treasury citadel captured and fortified by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648) in the Sahyadri mountains near Lonavala in Maharashtra, stands as Maharashtra's supreme UNESCO nominated hill fortress.
Rising above the lush Indrayani and Pawna river basins near Malavli and guarded by four sequential fortified stone portals, this invincible fortress housed the vast wealth of the Maratha Empire after Shivaji Maharaj's historic campaign in Surat.
It's the home of the four monumental gateways (Ganesh, Narayan, Hanuman, and Maha Darwaza) carved with fighting tigers and deities, the 1,500 meter-long Vinchukata (Scorpion's Tail) stone spur extending precariously into the windy abyss, the 16 sided Laxmi Kothi stepwell, and an intensely inspiring, deeply historic fortress ambiance filled with howling mountain gales, swirling clouds, and panoramic views extending across Pawna Lake and Visapur Fort.
It represents a rich Maharashtra Maratha Empire military architecture heritage apex, hill fortress engineering, and trekking tourism where double walled bastions, Vinchukata cliff walks, Bhaja Buddhist caves, and Lonavala travel circuits unite in Lohagad Fort.
Located at Lohagadwadi, it sits 11 km east of Lonavala town center, 5 km from Malavli Railway Station, 52 km from Pune International Airport (PNQ), 95 km from Mumbai via Mumbai Pune Expressway, and 4 km from Bhaja Caves, easily reached by suburban local train to Malavli followed by taxi or a scenic 1.5 hour trek.
Hikers enter the fort through four massive consecutive gateways built with interlocking black basalt blocks: Ganesh Darwaza (decorated with carved elephants and tigers), Narayan Darwaza (housing historic grain stores), Hanuman Darwaza (the oldest 12th century portal), and the towering Maha Darwaza.
Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in 1648 and utilized its impregnable high walls to securely store the royal state treasury, including precious gems and gold bullion captured during the 1670 expedition to Surat.
Truth is, walking along the knife edge ridge of Vinchukata while monsoon fog swirls around your legs and the waters of Pawna Lake shimmer 1,000 feet below will give you goosebumps.
Vinchukata (Scorpion's Tail): This iconic 1,500 meter-long fortified stone tongue stretches outward from the fort like a scorpion's stinger, providing a dramatic 360 degree viewpoint overlooking Pawna Dam and Tikona Fort.
Laxmi Kothi & Water Tanks: The summit houses the massive 16 sided Laxmi Kothi cistern and natural rock cut reservoirs that provided continuous water for garrisons during prolonged military sieges.
The Maratha Fortress & Cave Heritage Circuit: Morning departure to Malavli and drive to Lohagadwadi base village (7:30 AM to 8:30 AM) -> climb the well paved stone staircase through the four monumental gates to Lohagad summit (8:45 AM to 10:30 AM) -> walk the thrilling 1.5 km Vinchukata scorpion spur and photograph Laxmi Kothi stepwell (10:30 AM to 12:30 PM) -> descend to Lohagadwadi for a rustic village lunch of hot pithla bhakri, thecha, and fresh buttermilk (12:45 PM to 2:00 PM) -> visit 2nd century BCE rock cut Bhaja Caves to admire Buddhist stupas and wooden chaitya halls (2:30 PM to 4:00 PM) -> tour ancient Karla Caves and Ekvira Devi shrine (4:30 PM to 6:00 PM) -> evening return to Lonavala.
Visiting Code & Conduct: The fort steps are well paved with iron railings, making it suitable for beginners and families; exercise caution on the narrow Vinchukata spur during high monsoon winds; keep food packets inside bags due to active monkeys near the gateways.
After scaling the iron battlements of Lohagad Fort, explore twin Visapur Fort, tour Bhaja Caves, or visit Karla Caves.
Reaching Lohagad Fort is very simple across Lonavala in Maharashtra.
