Bhaja Caves

Bhaja Caves (the 2,200 year-old rock cut Hinayana Buddhist monastery comprising 22 ancient caves carved into the Sahyadri cliff face during the 2nd century BCE) near Malavli in the hill station region of Lonavala in Maharashtra, stands as Maharashtra's supreme ancient Buddhist rock cut architecture sanctuary.

Carved 400 feet above the Indrayani river basin during the Satavahana dynasty along the historic Bor Ghat trade route, this Buddhist monastic complex represents some of the earliest stone cut architecture in South Asia.

It's the home of Cave 12's great chaityagriha preserving authentic 2,200 year-old teak wood vaulted ceiling ribs, an open horseshoe sun window (Gavaksha) framing the mountain valley, Cave 19's bas reliefs depicting Surya and Indra on Airavata, a unique outdoor cemetery of 14 rock cut memorial stupas commemorating ancient Buddhist masters, and an intensely peaceful, deeply historic monastic ambiance filled with cool stone echoes, chanting birds, and a seasonal monsoon waterfall plunging right past the cave portals.

Located in Bhaja village, it sits 12 km east of Lonavala, 2 km from Malavli Railway Station, 54 km from Pune International Airport (PNQ), 98 km from Mumbai via Mumbai Pune Expressway, and 6 km from Karla Caves, easily reached by suburban local train to Malavli followed by a 15 minute walk and 200 stone steps.

Cave 12 Chaitya with 2,200 Year Wooden Teak Ribs

Cave 12 is widely celebrated as the crowning gem of early Buddhist rock cut architecture, featuring a massive open chaitya arch, 27 inwardly inclined octagonal pillars that replicate early wooden construction, and a solid rock stupa in the apse.

Astonishingly, the original curved vaulted ceiling ribs made of Malabar teak wood from 200 BCE remain completely intact after more than 2,200 years, offering living proof of ancient Indian woodworking craft.

Truth is, stepping inside the quiet stone hall of Cave 12 while morning sunlight beams through the horseshoe arch onto the ancient stupa is an impressive historical experience.

The 14 Stupa Cemetery & Surya Indra Carvings

The Stupa Gallery (Cave 20): This outdoor cluster contains 14 rock cut memorial stupas (five inside and nine outside) carved as memorials for revered Buddhist monks and teachers (Acharyas) who lived and died here.

Cave 19 Sculptures: Cave 19 encloses famous reliefs showing the Sun God Surya driving a four horse chariot and Indra riding his royal elephant Airavata, along with the earliest depiction of a woman playing a tabla.

Bhaja Caves & Malavli Buddhist Heritage Day Plan

The Ancient Caves & Fort Heritage Trail: Early morning train from Pune/Lonavala to Malavli Station or drive to Bhaja village (7:30 AM to 8:30 AM) -> climb the 200 shady stone steps to Bhaja Caves (8:45 AM to 11:15 AM: admire Cave 12's 2,200 year teak ribs, photograph the 14 stupa cemetery & examine Surya and Indra carvings in Cave 19) -> descend to Bhaja village for fresh sugarcane juice and hot kanda bhajji (11:30 AM to 12:15 PM) -> visit adjacent Karla Caves and Ekvira Devi Temple (12:45 PM to 2:45 PM) -> traditional Maharashtrian lunch of pitla bhakri and solkadhi -> afternoon climb to Lohagad Fort via the four royal gates and walk the Vinchukata scorpion ridge (3:30 PM to 6:00 PM) -> evening return to Lonavala.

Visiting Code & Conduct: Please remove shoes when stepping near sacred stupa shrines; flash photography is restricted inside delicate carved viharas; early morning hours between 8:30 AM and 11:00 AM offer the clearest natural sunlight through the chaitya sun window.
