Karla Caves

Karla Caves (the monumental 1st century BCE rock cut Buddhist sanctuary housing the largest rock cut Chaityagriha prayer hall in South Asia) in the Sahyadri mountains at Karli near Lonavala in Maharashtra, stands as Maharashtra's supreme ancient Buddhist monastic and archaeological landmark.

The Grand Chaityagriha & 37 Sculpted Elephant Pillars

Measuring 45 meters in length, 14 meters in width, and 14 meters in height, Cave 8 at Karla is the largest rock cut Buddhist prayer hall ever constructed in India.

The central nave is lined with 37 towering octagonal stone pillars crowned with intricately carved capitals showing men and women riding adorned kneeling elephants and royal steeds, while original 2,100 year-old teak wood ceiling ribs span the vaulted roof.

Truth is, standing beneath the soaring 46 foot-high vaulted rock ceiling while the echoing acoustics amplify the quietest whisper is a profound encounter with ancient Indian craftsmanship.

Ekvira Devi Temple & Simha Stambha Lion Pillar

Ekvira Devi Temple: Located right outside the great chaitya hall entrance, this revered shrine is the Kuldevi (family deity) of Maharashtra's Koli fishing community and attracts thousands of devotees during Chaitra Navratri.

Simha Stambha: Standing tall in the outer courtyard is the ancient monolithic stone pillar crowned with four addorsed lions, reminiscent of Emperor Ashoka's lion capitals.

Karla Caves & Heritage Day Plan

Visiting Code & Conduct: Please remove shoes before entering the inner Chaityagriha stupa sanctuary and Ekvira Devi sanctum; dress modestly as this is an active religious shrine; early morning visits avoid heavy midday pilgrim crowds.
