The viewpoint takes its name from the distinctive silhouette of the mountain ridge, which closely resembles the striking posture of a crouching lion guarding the deep Konkan and Deccan valleys.

During the monsoon months from July to September, the immense air pressure surging up the vertical rock face creates the famous reverse waterfall effect, lifting falling water droplets and paper high into the air against gravity.
