Old Palace

Old Palace (the historic 18th century Maratha royal seat, administrative Darbar, and revered Tulja Bhavani temple court famously known across Maharashtra as Bhavani Mandap) in the heritage core of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, stands as Kolhapur's supreme Maratha royal dynasty court and pilgrimage sanctuary.

The Historic 18th Century Darbar & Tulja Bhavani Shrine

Originally constructed in the 1700s, Bhavani Mandap featured a sprawling complex of 14 monumental stone courtyards before a massive fire in 1813 reduced it to the central Darbar hall and temple sanctum.

Inside sits the sacred black stone idol of Goddess Tulja Bhavani, the royal Kuldevi of the Maratha kings, placed in a beautifully adorned silver palanquin room where daily royal rituals continue to this day.

Truth is, standing in the wooden pillared Darbar hall where Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj signed historic decrees for free education and social equality while temple cymbals echo in the background will give you goosebumps.

Royal Trophies & Weaponry: The grand pavilion houses an enormous stuffed Indian bison (gaur), royal Bengal tigers, antique hunting rifles, curved Maratha swords, and silver royal palanquins.

Visiting Code & Conduct: Please remove footwear before entering the Tulja Bhavani temple sanctum; photography is allowed in the main courtyard but restricted near the inner temple sanctum; early morning and evening aarti hours offer the most atmospheric spiritual experience.
