Mahalaxmi Temple

Shri Mahalaxmi Temple (the 7th century Chalukyan black basalt shrine revered as Karveer Nivasini Ambabai and celebrated as one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas) in the sacred heritage core of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, stands as Kolhapur's supreme religious and architectural pilgrimage landmark.

The 7th Century Architecture & Monolithic Gemstone Idol

The temple complex is enclosed within high stone ramparts featuring five towering spires and multiple concentric stone halls: the Garbhagriha, Kurma Mandap, Chowki Mandap, and the grand Garud Mandap erected during Maratha rule.

The sacred four armed idol of Ambabai stands 3 feet tall on a stone pedestal, holding a mace, citrus fruit, shield, and bowl, carved from rare natural gemstone with a Shiva lingam on her crown symbolizing unity between Shaiva and Shakta faiths.

The Kirnotsav Sunbeam Festival & Navratri Rathotsav

Kirnotsav (Festival of Sunbeams): Twice every year (late January/early February and mid November), setting sun rays pass through the western Mahadwar and consecutive stone archways to bathe the idol's feet, chest, and face in glowing golden light.

Navratri & Silver Chariot Procession: During Ashwin Navratri, millions of devotees gather as the deity is adorned in royal jewelry and paraded through old Kolhapur on a monumental silver chariot (Rathotsav).
