Shri Jyotiba Temple (the holy 3,124 foot mountain pilgrimage shrine dedicated to Kedarling, the divine incarnation of the Brahma Vishnu-Shiva Trinity) atop the sacred Wadi Ratnagiri hill near Kolhapur in Maharashtra, stands as southern Maharashtra's supreme hilltop pilgrimage landmark.
Perched high above the lush Panchganga valley and constructed with carved black basalt stone by Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia of Gwalior in 1808, this revered shrine was consecrated by Goddess Mahalaxmi to guard the kingdom of Karveer.
It's the home of the sacred Kedarling, Kedareshwar, and Ramling black stone sanctums, the world famous Chaitra Poornima fair where millions of devotees throw tons of pink gulal powder into the air turning the mountain sky pink amidst deafening chants of Changbhala, towering 40 foot decorated holy flags (Sasankod), and an intensely electric, deeply spiritual mountain ambiance filled with the beat of traditional dhol tasha drums, ringing brass bells, and cool hilltop breezes sweeping across the Sahyadri ranges.
It represents a rich Maharashtra Maratha Scindia temple architecture heritage apex, Nath tradition pilgrimage, and regional folklore where black stone shikharas, Panhala hill fort ramparts, Mahalaxmi temple circuits, and Kolhapur travel routes unite in Jyotiba Temple.
Located in Wadi Ratnagiri, it sits 18 km northwest of Kolhapur Central Railway Station, 16 km from Panhala Fort, 28 km from Kolhapur Airport (KLH), and 240 km from Pune via NH 48, easily reached by state transport bus, taxi, or private vehicle along the scenic hilltop ghat road.
The temple complex houses three interconnected stone shrines: the central Kedarling temple built in 1808 by Gwalior's Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia, the Kedareshwar temple constructed by Malji Nilam Panhalkar in 1780, and the Ramling shrine built in 1780 by Malharji Gaikwad.
Surrounding the main sanctum are sacred water teerths including the Trishul Teerth and Kashi Kund where pilgrims take ritual cleansing baths before climbing the stone steps to offer prayers.
Truth is, standing in the temple courtyard as a cloud of fragrant pink gulal rises against the black stone spire to the roar of Changbhala is an overwhelming spiritual spectacle that stays in your heart forever.
The Pink Gulal Chaitra Yatra: On full moon day in Chaitra (April), over 800,000 pilgrims converge to shower millions of tons of pink gulal and dance with 40 foot sacred holy staffs (Sasankod).
Panhala Fort & Mahalaxmi Circuit: Located just 16 km away, travelers can scale the 14 km stone ramparts of Panhala Fort and complete the sacred darshan at Shri Mahalaxmi Temple.
The Sacred Mountain & Fort Heritage Circuit: Morning departure from Kolhapur and scenic uphill drive to Wadi Ratnagiri hill (7:00 AM to 8:00 AM) -> participate in the sacred morning aarti at Shri Jyotiba Temple, offer pink gulal and coconut prasad, and view the panoramic valley from the temple ramparts (8:15 AM to 10:30 AM) -> breakfast of hot batata poha and tea at a hilltop stall (10:45 AM to 11:30 AM) -> drive 16 km along the ridge road to historic Panhala Fort (12:00 PM to 2:30 PM: explore Teen Darwaza, Sajja Kothi & Ambarkhana granaries) -> rustic lunch in Panhala town featuring pithla bhakri and thecha (2:45 PM to 3:45 PM) -> return to Kolhapur city to visit the grand New Palace (4:30 PM to 6:00 PM) -> evening darshan at Shri Mahalaxmi Temple (6:30 PM to 8:00 PM).
Visiting Code & Conduct: Please remove footwear before ascending the temple courtyard; during Sunday visits and festival days, wear clothing suitable for pink gulal powder showers; carry windcheaters as hilltop winds remain cool throughout the day.
After receiving blessings at Shri Jyotiba Temple, explore Panhala Fort, visit Mahalaxmi Temple, or tour New Palace.
