Sabarimala

Sabarimala (celebrated globally as the sacred Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple and India's largest annual pilgrimage destination), situated atop a rugged 468 meter (1,535 foot) mountain peak in the deep Periyar Tiger Reserve rainforests of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, is one of the world's most egalitarian, spiritually intense, and sacred Hindu pilgrimage sanctums.

Consecrated according to legend by Lord Parasurama on the banks of the sacred Pamba River, this ancient forest mahakshetram is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa (the divine union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu as Mohini, hence known as Hariharaputhra or Sree Dharma Sastha), depicted in eternal Brahmacharya yoga posture with folded knees bound by a Yogapatta strap on a gold embossed peetham.

It's the home of the sacred Pathinettampadi (18 Gold Plated Holy Steps representing the five indriyas, eight ragas, three gunas, vidya, and avidya which only pilgrims observing the rigorous 41 day Vratham and carrying the Irumudikettu can climb), the holy Pamba River where millions take purificatory ritual baths, the sanctified shrine of Muslim warrior Vavarswami (Vavar Nada, standing inside the temple courtyard as an extraordinary symbol of universal communal harmony), the sacred Malikappuram Devi Temple, and the grand annual Mandala Makaravilakku pilgrimage season drawing over 40 million devotees culminating in the celestial Makarajyothi star sighting over Ponnambalamedu.

It represents a rich spiritual and philosophical sanctuary where radical casteless Tat Tvam Asi ('That Thou Art') non dualism, intense ascetic penance, sacred Western Ghats forest conservation, and universal brotherhood unite in Central Travancore.

Located in the dense Ranni Reserve Forest, the base camp at Pamba sits 65 km east of Pathanamthitta town, 90 km from Chengannur Railway Station (CNGR), and 150 km from Cochin International Airport (COK), accessible via dedicated KSRTC pilgrimage shuttle buses with a 5 km mountain forest trek ascending from Pamba to the Sannidhanam.

The 41 Day Vratham, Irumudikettu & Pathinettampadi

Before embarking on the pilgrimage, devotees observe a strict 41 day Mandala Vratham wearing black or saffron dhotis, Tulsi malas, practicing celibacy, and surrendering their individual identity as 'Swamis'.

Pilgrims carry the two compartment cloth bag (Irumudikettu) holding a ghee filled coconut (Neythenga) for the Lord's Abhishekam, earning the divine privilege to ascend the 18 sacred gold clad steps.

Truth is, uttering the powerful collective chant 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa' alongside thousands of pilgrims ascending the mist shrouded Nilakkal Pamba mountain slopes generates an overwhelming spiritual energy.

Makaravilakku, Makarajyothi & Ponnambalamedu

The Grand Festival: The two month pilgrimage begins on the first day of Vrichikam (mid November) with the 41 day Mandala Pooja, continuing until the Makara Sankranti festival in mid January.

The Celestial Makarajyothi: On Makara Sankranti evening, millions witness the sacred jewel adorned procession (Thiruvabharanam) and the revered triple flash of light (Makarajyothi) across the horizon at Ponnambalamedu hill.

Vavar Nada & Inter Faith Communal Harmony

The Shrine of Vavar: Devotees unfailingly pay homage at the Vavar Nada shrine within the temple complex, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa's trusted Arab Muslim warrior friend and general, Vavar.

Tat Tvam Asi Philosophy: Inscribed on the front of the sanctum, the Upanishadic Mahavakya 'Tat Tvam Asi' reminds every pilgrim that the divine dwells within all beings equally without caste or religious discrimination.
