Kovalam is located in the district of Thiruvananthapuram. It claims high tourist footfalls every year between September and March and is probably, the most celebrated tourist destination of God's Own Country.This enthralling hamlet was initially a fishing settlement, adorned with spectacular beaches. The arrival of the flower child brigade changed Kovalam forever. They were followed by the sight-seers of Thiruvananthapuram who traversed across the stony foreland to catch a glimpse of the azure sea and golden beaches. Twenty-First Century Kovalam has lost most of its arcadian aura and has undergone a complete metamorphosis. Kovalam, which is Malayalam for ‘Grove of coconut trees’ is located by the Arabian Sea in the Indian state of Kerala, and is known for its amazing beaches. As the name suggests, the city is characterized by its endless rows of coconut trees and is often called the ‘Paradise of the South’. The town became one of the major tourist hotspots in India, after the hippy culture explosion during the 1970’s and it became an essential part of the Hippy Trail. The town’s iconic Halcyon Castle was built during the time of the Travancore Queen Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi in the 1930’s.
