Manjinikkara Church

Manjinikkara Church (celebrated across global Syriac Christianity as Manjinikkara Dayara St. Ignatius Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church and the holy resting place of Patriarch Saint Ignatius Elias III), situated on a peaceful hillock in Omalloor just 6 km southwest of Pathanamthitta town in Kerala, is one of the world's most sacred, spiritually renowned, and internationally venerated Jacobite Syrian pilgrimage shrines.

Established in 1932 on a peaceful rural hillock overlooking the Achankovil river valley, this monastery cathedral preserves the sacred tomb (Kabar) of Moran Mor Ignatius Elias III, the 119th Supreme Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, who traveled to India from the ancient Apostolic See of Antioch in 1931 on a noble peace mission to unite the divided factions of the Malankara church and attained heavenly rest at Manjinikkara on February 13, 1932.

It's the home of the sanctified patriarchal tomb chapel (Kabaridam) visited year round by hundreds of thousands seeking miraculous healings, an imposing Syrian monastery complex with high arched belfries and stone portals, the sacred relic chapel preserving personal articles and canonical vestments of the Sainted Patriarch, and the world famous annual Manjinikkara Feast (Manjinikkara Perunnal) celebrated every February, highlighted by the majestic barefoot pilgrimage (Kaalnada Yatra) of over one hundred thousand pilgrims walking hundreds of miles across South India.

The 1932 Peace Mission of Patriarch Saint Ignatius Elias III

Ignoring frail health and advancing age, Patriarch Elias III arrived in India in March 1931 at the invitation of Lord Irwin (Viceroy of India) and Malankara church leaders to build ecclesiastical unity.

After ministering across dozens of Kerala parishes, he arrived at Manjinikkara Dayara in February 1932, entered eternal rest during evening prayer, and was canonized as a Saint by the Holy Synod of Antioch in 1987.
