Konni Forest Reserve

Konni Forest Reserve (celebrated across India as the historic Konni Elephant Training Centre and the gateway to the Adavi Eco Tourism wilderness corridor), situated along the forested banks of the Achankovil River just 11 km southeast of Pathanamthitta town in Kerala, is one of Kerala's most famous, heritage rich, and family friendly eco tourism sanctuaries.

Established in 1941 by the Travancore Royal Forest Department, this 9 acre forest sanctuary was historically one of the premier elephant capturing (Kraal system) and taming centers in South India, where wild elephants trapped from the surrounding evergreen Western Ghats rainforests were trained into grand temple and timber working pachyderms using giant teakwood cages called 'Aanakkoodu'.

It's the home of massive 1941 era wooden elephant cages capable of sheltering six full grown elephants simultaneously, the state's premier elephant rehabilitation center providing veterinary care to rescued calf elephants, an interactive elephant museum detailing pachyderm anatomy and habitat history, thrilling bowl shaped bamboo coracle boat rafting (Kutta Vanchi) along the scenic Kallar River at nearby Adavi (13 km away), tree top bamboo eco cottages, and guided jungle trekking trails through tropical evergreen reserve forests.

It represents a rich wildlife and eco adventure sanctuary where 80 year-old forestry traditions, humane elephant rehabilitation, thrilling river rafting, and lush Western Ghats wilderness unite in Pathanamthitta district.

The Historic 1941 Aanakkoodu (Teakwood Cages)

Built in 1941 using solid Malabar teak beams, the massive elephant cage stands 12.65 meters long, 8.6 meters wide, and 7 meters high, capable of holding up to six elephants at once.

Though capturing wild elephants in pits was banned in 1977, the cages now provide safe shelter and medical convalescence for injured, orphaned, and rescued calves under veterinary supervision.

Truth is, watching baby elephants joyfully splashing during their morning river bath at the Achankovil shallows brings immense smiles to children and adults alike.

Elephant Museum, Feeding Sessions & Elephant Rides

Elephant Museum: The on site museum displays complete elephant skeletal frameworks, antique capturing ropes, traditional bells, and educational exhibits on pachyderm conservation.

Public Feeding Sessions: Visitors can watch mahouts prepare special nutritious jaggery rice-ragi balls (Aana Oottu) and interact closely with friendly resident elephants like Priyadarshini and Soman.

Adavi Coracle Rafting: Just 13 km from Konni, the Adavi Eco Tourism project offers thrilling 2.5 kilometer river rides on round bamboo coracle boats navigating the tranquil Kallar River rapids.
