Muloor Smarakam

Muloor Smarakam (celebrated in Kerala cultural history as the Mahakavi Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker Memorial and Sarasa Kavi Heritage House), situated in the peaceful village of Elavumthitta just 12 km west of Pathanamthitta town in Kerala, is one of Central Travancore's most revered, inspiring, and culturally cherished literary heritage monuments.

Preserved by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, this historic heritage home was the ancestral residence of Mahakavi Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker (1869, 1931), the renowned poet, social reformer, close associate of Sree Narayana Guru, and celebrated master of humorous, satirical Malayalam poetry affectionately crowned 'Sarasa Kavi' by the literary world.

It's the home of the preserved traditional Kerala timber framed ancestral nalukettu residence ('Padmanabha Vilasam'), an authentic literary research museum showcasing the poet's original handwritten palm leaf manuscripts and early printed anthologies, personal artifacts including his vintage writing desk, walking sticks, and royal honorific shawls, a well stocked public library dedicated to Kerala Renaissance literature, and a landscaped memorial garden housing the memorial tomb and statue of the Mahakavi.

It represents a rich cultural and literary sanctuary where late 19th century Kerala social reform poetry, classic Travancore vernacular architecture, non violent caste emancipation philosophy, and peaceful rural greenery unite in Pathanamthitta district.

Located in Elavumthitta along the Pathanamthitta Chengannur route, it sits 12 km from Pathanamthitta KSRTC Bus Station, 14 km from Chengannur Railway Station (CNGR), and 115 km from Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), easily accessible by regular town buses, auto rickshaws, and private cars.

Born in 1869 in Elavumthitta, Muloor S. Padmanabha Panicker emerged as one of the towering literary giants of the modern Malayalam renaissance, using wit, rhyme, and sharp satire to combat caste injustices.

Deeply influenced by Sree Narayana Guru and Chattampi Swamikal, he authored iconic poetic collections including 'Kaviramayanam', 'Nalancharitham Kilippattu', and celebrated translations of the Sanskrit Dhammapada.
