Niranam

Niranam (celebrated across global Christendom as Niranam St. Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church and the primordial apostolic see founded by Saint Thomas in 54 AD), situated on the fertile riverine banks of the Pamba and Manimala rivers in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, is one of the seven foundational churches (Ezharappallikal) of India and an epicentre of Oriental Orthodox ecclesiastical heritage.

Established in 54 AD by Apostle Saint Thomas (Mar Thoma Shleeha) during his historic gospel journey across the ancient Malabar port of Nelcynda (Niranam), this venerable cathedral has witnessed nearly two millennia of unbroken Saint Thomas Christian liturgy, serving as the headquarters of the Malankara Metropolitan primates and the birthplace of the famous Niranam Poets (Niranam Kavikal / Kannassa Panikkars) who pioneered early Malayalam devotional literature.

It's the home of an ancient consecrated granite cross (Kurisupally) believed to have been planted by Saint Thomas, the holy mortal remains (Holy Relics) of Saint Thomas preserved in a golden reliquary, the sacred tombs of second Catholicos Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese II and historic Malankara Metropolitans, an imposing Syrian Kerala stone facade with high belfries, rare 16th century Persian and Syriac stone inscriptions, and the grand annual Feast of Saint Mary celebrated with spiritual fervor every August and December.

Located in Niranam village near Kadapra, it sits just 8 km west of Thiruvalla Railway Station (TRVL), 32 km west of Pathanamthitta district headquarters, and 115 km from Cochin International Airport (COK), easily accessible by KSRTC buses, shared autos, and private cars.

Apostle St. Thomas (54 AD) & The Ezharappallikal

After landing at the ancient port of Muziris (Kodungallur) in 52 AD, Apostle Thomas traveled south to the bustling inland spice port of Nelcynda (modern Niranam), converting noble families and establishing this church in 54 AD.

Niranam Church holds a preeminent spiritual position among the seven churches of Malankara, functioning as the Mother Church for dozens of historical Christian parishes across Central Travancore.
