Viceregal Lodge, also revered as Rashtrapati Niwas and home to the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), crowns the breezy summit of Observatory Hill in West Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.
Designed by master architect Henry Irwin in the dramatic Scottish Baronial and Jacobethan style and completed in 1888 for Viceroy Lord Dufferin, this imposing grey stone palace served as the supreme summer seat of British imperial governance from where one fifth of humanity was ruled.
It's the home of historic teak paneled conference chambers where the fateful 1945 Shimla Conference and 1947 Partition plans were negotiated between Mountbatten, Nehru, Jinnah, and Patel, an extraordinary three storey Burmese teakwood entrance gallery, the historic 1888 indoor electric lighting system, and 110 acres of manicured botanical lawns framed by ancient Himalayan cedars.
It represents a rich architectural and political sanctuary where 19th century imperial history, monumental stonecraft, academic scholarship, and striking views of the snow clad Western Himalayas unite above the Queen of Hills.
Located on Observatory Hill just 4 km west of Shimla Mall Road, it sits 3 km from Shimla Railway Station (SML), 20 km from Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti, SLV), and 115 km from Chandigarh Airport (IXC), easily reached by local taxi, auto, or scenic walking paths through Summer Hill.
Constructed using local grey sandstone and light blue limestone quarried from Taradevi, the mansion was engineered with cutting edge Victorian technology, including steam heating, a dedicated hydraulic lift, and the first electric indoor lighting in Shimla.
Irwin incorporated turrets, gables, arched verandas, and heavy mullioned windows reminiscent of a medieval Scottish castle perched amid Himalayan mountain ridges.
Truth is, thirteen successive British viceroys governed the Indian Empire from this very hill during the pleasant summer months before India attained its freedom in August 1947.
The Conference Room: Inside the grand ground floor reception hall stands the round conference table where the momentous 1945 Shimla Conference took place, chaired by Lord Wavell to deliberate India's self governance.
Birth of Independence: In June 1947, Lord Mountbatten met here with Jawaharlal Nehru, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Sardar Patel, and Maulana Azad to finalize the historic plans that led to the partition of the subcontinent and the birth of independent India.
IIAS Transformation: In 1965, India's second President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, converted the royal residence into the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, a premier research center for humanities and social sciences.
Heritage Botanical Grounds: The 110 acre estate features manicured English rose gardens, rare tulip trees, exotic conifers, and a scenic glasshouse nursery offering peaceful strolls overlooking the deodar covered slopes of Summer Hill.
After touring Viceregal Lodge, ride the historic Kalka Shimla Toy Train, walk along the bustling promenade of Mall Road and The Ridge, or visit the towering hilltop statue at Jakhoo Temple.
Reaching Viceregal Lodge in Shimla is convenient and scenic across Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.
