built on Observatory Hill roughly 5 kilometers west of the central Ridge in Shimla, the Indian Institute Of Advanced Studies (IIAS) is housed within the historic Viceregal Lodge in Himachal Pradesh. Designed by British architect Henry Irwin and completed in 1888 using local blue limestone and sandstone, the monumental estate served as the summer headquarters of British Viceroys.
The building represents an exceptional example of Scottish Baronial and Victorian Renaissance architecture, featuring teak woodwork panelling, grand indoor galleries, and a vast collection of rare archival books. key historical summits, including the 1945 Simla Conference and discussions leading to Indian Independence in 1947, transpired in its stately committee chambers.
In 1965, President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan repurposed the estate as a premier residential research institute for humanities and social sciences. Visitors enjoy guided tours of the ground floor galleries, historic photo exhibits, and strolls through manicured botanical lawns filled with ancient pine trees.
