Shimla State Museum

Located on Mount Pleasant in Chaura Maidan roughly 2.5 kilometers west of the central Mall Road in Shimla, the Shimla State Museum (Himachal State Museum) is dedicated to preserving the cultural legacy of Himachal Pradesh. Housed in a charming colonial stone mansion that once served as the private residence of Lord William Beresford, the museum opened to the public in 1974.

The museum features extensive galleries displaying exquisite Kangra and Basholi school Pahari miniature paintings, eighth century stone and wood sculptures, ancient coins, traditional hill weapons, and ethnographical costumes from Kinnaur, Kullu, and Lahaul Spiti. A dedicated doll gallery showcases native bridal attire from diverse Himalayan valleys.

A specialized section displays British colonial lithographs and early 20th century photographs documenting the evolution of Shimla as the summer capital. The surrounding gardens offer quiet seating with panoramic vistas across the southern valley slopes.
