Kohora Range in Kaziranga (celebrated across international wildlife conservation as the Central Safari Zone and official operational headquarters of Kaziranga National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site, entered through the historic Mihimukh Gate at Kohora town along NH 715, world famous for offering the ultimate classic blend of elephant back safaris across alluvial grasslands and 4x4 open jeep trails through dense tropical wetlands, high densities of Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceroses, Royal Bengal Tigers, Asian Elephants, Wild Asiatic Water Buffaloes, and Swamp Deer / Barasingha, and multi tier wildlife watchtowers overlooking sweeping riverine wetlands), located at Kohora in Kaziranga in Assam, stands as Kaziranga's most iconic, central, and comprehensive safari destination.
Functioning as the bustling nerve center of the entire 430 square-kilometer national park, Kohora hosts the Central Forest Range Office, tourist reception centers, state wildlife eco lodges, and the primary departure point for daily morning elephant safaris at Mihimukh.
It's the home of the world famous Mihimukh Watchtower providing panoramic 360 degree views across vast water bodies dotted with floating water hyacinths and basking turtles, the early morning elephant safari tracks where trained forest pachyderms carry travelers through dewy savannah grasslands to view mother rhinos nursing calves, the scenic Daflang Beel and Kathpora waterholes where wild elephant herds congregate for evening mud baths, the dense patches of semi evergreen cane brakes and elephant grass reaching heights of five meters, and an intensely thrilling, authentic safari atmosphere where the roar of Bengal tigers and trumpeting of wild elephants echo through the morning fog.
It represents a rich Assam wildlife conservation heritage, Big Five animal viewing, and premier eco tourism where elephant rides, 4x4 jeep safaris, wetland watchtowers, and Kaziranga park hospitality unite in Kohora Range.
Located directly off National Highway 715 (old NH 37) at Kohora town, it sits 12 km east of Bagori Range, 22 km west of Agoratoli Range, 30 km east of Burapahar Range, 85 km west of Jorhat, and 215 km east of Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), easily reached by car, private taxi, or state bus.
The Mihimukh boarding point is the oldest and most famous safari departure gate in Kaziranga, where tourists board departmental riding elephants at dawn.
As the sunrise pierces the dense morning mist, elephants wade through natural watercourses and tall grassland patches, allowing passengers to observe one horned rhinos, hog deer, and wild boars at close proximity.
Truth is, watching the golden winter sun break through morning fog over the Kohora grasslands from the back of an elephant is pure magic.
Jeep Trail Highlights: The 28 kilometer central safari circuit winds past Kathpora waterhole, Daflang Tower, and Diphalu River, offering the highest chances of spotting the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.
Mihimukh & Daflang Towers: Multi tiered wooden watchtowers allow safari groups to disembark under armed guard protection to scan distant marshes with high power spotting scopes.
The Complete Kohora Day: Morning elephant safari at Mihimukh (5:30 AM to 6:30 AM) -> breakfast and visit to Kaziranga Orchid Park (9:30 AM to 12:00 PM) -> afternoon jeep safari in Central Range (1:30 PM to 4:30 PM) -> evening Assamese cultural Bihu dance show.
Tourist Infrastructure: Kohora town offers the highest concentration of eco resorts, safari booking centers, ATM facilities, and authentic Assamese thali restaurants.
After exploring the central grasslands of Kohora Range, take a safari in Bagori Range, birdwatch at Agoratoli, or tour Kaziranga.
