About Vishnuprayag

Vishnuprayag is a sacred river confluence and holy spiritual site situated at an elevation of 1,372 meters (4,501 feet) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Revered as the foremost and first of the sacred Panch Prayags along the descent of the holy river Ganga, Vishnuprayag marks the roaring confluence where the turquoise waters of the Alaknanda River meet the swift, foaming torrent of the Dhauliganga River (flowing down from the Niti Pass).

According to ancient Hindu scripture, the great sage Narada performed deep penance (tapasya) at this confluence to please Lord Vishnu, who appeared before him and blessed the waters with supreme spiritual virtue. Perched just above the confluence is the historic Vishnu Temple, originally constructed in 1889 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, alongside the sacred stone slab known as Vishnu Kund. Pilgrims traveling through Vishnuprayag toward Badrinath take a ritual dip at the confluence ghats and admire the dramatic meeting of the two powerful glacial rivers enclosed in a deep mountain gorge.

How to Reach Vishnuprayag

Vishnuprayag is located just 12 km north of Joshimath along National Highway 07 toward Badrinath.

By Road: State transport buses, taxis, and shared jeeps operate regularly along NH 07 between Joshimath (12 km) and Badrinath (33 km). Taxis easily drop visitors at the confluence bridge.
By Train: Rishikesh and Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway stations are roughly 262 km away with Northern Railway services.
By Air: Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport is 277 km away with regular flights connecting Delhi, Mumbai, and other major metros.

The best months to visit Vishnuprayag are May to June and September to November during the Char Dham Yatra season.

Seasonal Climate Overview

Summer (May to June): Pleasant mountain weather with daytime temperatures between 14°C and 24°C. Ideal for visiting the confluence and Ahilyabai temple.
Monsoon (July to August): Both Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers swell with immense force. Visitors should observe the confluence from the bridge.
Autumn (September to November): Crisp, cool days and crystal clear river waters with night temperatures dipping between 3°C and 12°C.
