Situated at an altitude of 1,829 meters (6,000 feet) in Rudraprayag district along NH 107, Sonprayag marks the holy confluence where the roaring Mandakini River meets the crystal clear waters of the Songanga (Vasuki Ganga) in Uttarakhand. Serving as the primary logistical base for the Kedarnath Dham Yatra, all private tourist vehicles and large pilgrim buses terminate their forward journey at Sonprayag.
In Hindu religious belief, taking a sacred dip at the confluence cleanses accumulated karmic sins and prepares pilgrims mentally and spiritually before entering the sacred Kedarnath valley. According to mythology, it is said that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati crossed this sangam on their way to their divine wedding at nearby Triyuginarayan.
