Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave is an extraordinary subterranean limestone cave temple located in the Pithoragarh district near Gangolihat in Patal Bhuvaneshwar. Perched at an elevation of 1,350 meters, this sacred underground cavern measures 160 meters long and descends 90 feet deep, housing naturally formed stalactite and stalagmite rock formations revered as the 33 crore Hindu deities.
According to the Skanda Purana, the cave was discovered in Treta Yuga by King Rituparna and later visited by the Pandavas in Dvapara Yuga before being consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya in 1191 AD. Devotees and adventure travelers touring Uttarakhand climb down iron chains through a narrow tunnel to witness awe inspiring stone icons of Sheshnag, Ganesha with severed head, Kamadhenu's udders, and the hair locks (Jata) of Lord Shiva.
Truth is, descending into the lighted limestone caverns feels like entering another dimension. Cave entry is open daily from 6:30 AM to 5:00 PM with an entry ticket of ?50 per person and mandatory local priest guides.
