Lal Tibba

Lal Tibba, translating to Red Hill, is the highest geographical viewpoint in the Queen of Hills, rising to an altitude of 2,275 meters (7,464 feet) atop Depot Hill in the serene military cantonment of Landour near Mussoorie. Retaining untouched British cantonment tranquility in Uttarakhand, this vantage point offers glorious vistas of the Greater Himalayas.

The hill derived its name from the distinctive red soil on its crest and the fiery crimson glow of sunsets reflecting off the surrounding deodar woods. A high magnification vintage Japanese optical telescope was installed atop the rooftop viewing deck in 1967, allowing visitors to inspect snow crests in crystal detail.

Through the telescope lens, visitors can witness close up panoramas of sacred Himalayan summits including Badrinath, Kedarnath, Nilkantha, Bandarpoonch, and the Tibetan border peaks. Cozy rustic wooden cafes on the ridge serve hot ginger lemon tea, waffles, and apple pie.

The walking route from Char Dukan through towering deodar trees and heritage colonial cottages (like Sister Bazaar and Prakash Store) is one of the most delightful walks in Uttarakhand.
