Atri Muni Ashram (Atri Cave) is a revered subterranean rock hermitage tucked inside a deep gorge of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary near Mandal village in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Resting at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters, this sacred cave hermitage is believed to be the ancient meditation abode of Maharishi Atri, his devout wife Sati Anasuya, and their divine triplets, Lord Dattatreya, Sage Durvasa, and Moon God Chandra.
A spectacular feature of the ashram is that visitors must walk behind a perennial 150 foot mountain waterfall that cascades over the rock overhang to reach the natural cave temple entrance. The rewarding 6 km forest trek starts from Mandal village, passing through dense oak and deodar woods, first visiting the revered Anasuya Devi Temple before descending 2 km further into the river canyon. Pilgrims visiting Mandal experience deep spiritual serenity amidst the continuous mist and roar of the falls.
