The holy natural thermal spring known simply as Kund (Gauri Kund Hot Water Spring) sits at an elevation of 1,982 meters (6,502 feet) along the banks of the roaring Mandakini River in Uttarakhand. According to ancient legends, Goddess Parvati performed intense penance here to win Lord Shiva's hand in marriage, and Lord Ganesha was created near this pool. Devotees arriving in Gaurikund take a holy dip in the natural warm sulfur pool to cleanse body and soul and relieve mountain fatigue before starting their rigorous 16 km climb to the Kedarnath shrine.
