The Kanakakunnu Palace

The Kanakakunnu Palace (celebrated as the Golden Hill Palace of Travancore), majestically seated atop a lush 32 acre hillock in Museum Vellayambalam at the heart of Trivandrum in Kerala, is one of Kerala's most architecturally elegant royal heritage landmarks and lively cultural hubs.

Constructed during the late 19th century under the reign of Maharaja Sree Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma of the princely kingdom of Travancore, this grand heritage estate was originally built as a royal retreat to host lavish royal banquets, European dignitaries, and visiting British viceroys amidst sprawling landscaped gardens.

It's the home of exquisite traditional Kerala timber architecture blended smoothly with colonial Victorian neo classical design, the famous Nishagandhi and Sooryakanthi open air cultural amphitheatres hosting the annual All India Dance Festival and International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), antique crystal chandeliers and carved teakwood royal furniture, a heritage art museum gallery, and illuminated night garden promenades beneath century old heritage trees.

The 19th Century Royal Banqueting House & Architecture

Maharaja Sree Moolam Thirunal built the palace with red brick masonry, sloping clay tiled gables, arched verandas, and ornamental wooden gables typical of Travancore royal residences.

Inside the royal halls hang priceless crystal chandeliers, antique porcelain vases, carved teakwood dining tables, and portraits of the royal dynasty preserved in pristine condition.

Truth is, the palace was deliberately designed as a non vegetarian royal guest house to entertain foreign diplomats without disturbing orthodox palace culinary customs at Kowdiar or Padmanabhapuram.
