Observatory (universally celebrated as the Thiruvananthapuram Astronomical Observatory), majestically sitting high on the highest geographical hillock (Observatory Hill / Kanakakkunnu Hill) at an elevation of 60 meters above sea level in Trivandrum in Kerala, is one of modern India's oldest, most historically significant, and architecturally elegant astronomical observatories.

Conceived and founded in 1837 by the visionary scholar monarch Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma of the princely kingdom of Travancore with technical guidance from British royal astronomer John Caldecott, this prestigious institution pioneered celestial star mapping, magnetic field studies, and meteorological tracking in South Asia over 185 years ago.

It's the home of antique 19th century brass refracting telescopes and astrolabes, modern computerized 11 inch Schmidt Cassegrain optical telescopes for public night sky stargazing, an expansive panoramic terrace offering 360 degree sunset and skyline views across Thiruvananthapuram city and the Arabian Sea horizon, lush heritage rose gardens and terraced lawns, and a legacy managed by the Department of Physics at the University of Kerala.

It represents a rich scientific and historical sanctuary where royal 19th century Travancore intellectual enlightenment, classical astrophysics, celestial planetary discoveries, and peaceful hilltop nature unite in the state capital.

Located in Observatory Hill near Museum Bains Compound in Kanakakkunnu, it sits just 3.5 km north of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC) and 6 km from Trivandrum International Airport (TRV), easily accessible by auto rickshaw, city bus, or private vehicle.

The 1837 Swathi Thirunal Legacy & Caldecott Science

Recognizing the scientific value of celestial timekeeping, Maharaja Swathi Thirunal funded the purchase of precision British astronomical equipment from Dollond and Troughton & Simms of London.

Under pioneering director John Caldecott and later John Allan Broun, the observatory made international scientific breakthroughs in calculating Earth's magnetic equator and documenting solar flares.

Truth is, standing inside the historic observation dome with its rotating copper roof and polished brass instruments connects visitors directly with the golden age of 19th century world astronomy.

Public Night Sky Stargazing & Planetary Viewing

Night Sky Telescope Sessions: On clear evenings (Monday to Friday from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM), the observatory opens its computerized 11 inch optical telescopes to students and tourists for viewing lunar craters, the red spot of Jupiter, Saturn's rings, and distant star nebulae.

Astronomical Library & Artifacts: The interior gallery showcases century old handwritten logbooks, antique barometers, transit instruments, and rare celestial celestial star maps preserved by the University of Kerala.

Hilltop Gardens & 360 Degree Sunset Panoramas

Highest Point in Town: Situated on the highest elevated knoll in central Trivandrum, the terraced gardens offer cool breezes, manicured lawns, and panoramic views of the city skyline stretching to the distant Western Ghats.

Sunset Viewing Deck: In late afternoons, travelers gather on the western parapet to watch golden sunsets over the Arabian Sea horizon before settling in for evening stargazing sessions.
