Tellicherry Pier

Tellicherry Pier (celebrated locally as the historic Thalassery Kadalpaalam and British East India Company Spice Wharf), jutting dramatically into the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea in Thalassery in Kerala, is one of North Malabar's most romantic, atmospheric, and historically significant maritime heritage landmarks.

Constructed in 1910 by the British colonial administration to facilitate direct offshore cargo lighterage and steamship loading, this 560 foot-long iron and-timber sea bridge allowed ocean freighters to anchor in deep Arabian waters while transport lighters carried famous Malabar Tellicherry black pepper, cardamom, coffee, and copra directly from onshore warehouses.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Thalassery was the undisputed global hub for the Malabar spice trade, shipping premium 'Tellicherry Extra Bold' black pepper to European and Mediterranean ports.

Before the pier's construction in 1910, heavy surf often capsized small rowing cargo boats; the 560 foot pier provided steam powered cranes and railway tracks to transfer spice sacks safely onto ocean cargo vessels.
