Teak Museum

Teak Museum (celebrated globally as the Nilambur Teak Museum and the world's very first thematic museum dedicated entirely to the royal timber species Tectona grandis), situated on the sub centre campus of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) in Nilambur just 40 km northeast of Malappuram town in Kerala, is one of South India's most fascinating, educational, and scientifically curated forestry institutions.

Established in 1995 on a lush 4 hectare campus along the Nilambur Gudur highway to commemorate Nilambur's legendary status as the cradle of the world's oldest man made teak plantation (the historic Conolly's Plot planted in 1844 AD), this two storeyed thematic museum provides an exhaustive, multi dimensional exhibition on the history, botany, cultivation, harvesting, economics, and artistic utilization of teak wood.

It's the home of an impressive root system exhibit of a 55 year-old living teak tree spanning the entrance portico, interactive life size dioramas showcasing traditional forest harvesting and river log rafting down the Chaliyar River, a 480 year-old teak cross section trunk disc with labeled historical growth rings, a diverse medicinal plant garden harboring over 150 species, a scenic butterfly park and bio resources nature trail, and a grand 160 year-old wooden sailing dhow (Uru) model crafted from Nilambur teak.

It represents a rich botanical and forestry sanctuary where 19th century colonial silvicultural history, advanced forest scientific research, lush Nilambur woodland nature trails, and global timber craft heritage unite in Malappuram district.

Located at Chanthakkunnu along the Nilambur Ooty road (SH 28 corridor), it sits just 4 km from Nilambur Road Railway Station (NIL), 40 km from Malappuram town, and 45 km from Calicut International Airport (CCJ), easily accessible by passenger train, KSRTC buses, and private taxis.

The 1844 Conolly's Plot Legacy & KFRI Foundation

In 1844, H. V. Conolly (Collector of Malabar) and his native assistant Chathu Menon initiated the world's first systematic commercial teak plantation in Nilambur to supply durable timber for British naval ships.

To honor this historic silvicultural milestone, KFRI established the museum in 1995 to educate researchers, students, and tourists on sustainable tropical forest management.

Truth is, walking beneath the massive exposed root system of a full grown teak tree suspended inside the museum hall fills visitors with wonder at nature's architectural strength.

Exhibits: 480 Year-Old Tree Rings & Chaliyar Log Rafting

The 480 Year Tree Disc: The museum displays a massive cross section of a 480 year-old wild teak felled in Parambikulam, with growth rings calibrated to key global historical events.

River Log Floating Diorama: Realistic scale models depict how indigenous tribal laborers tied logs into floating rafts, guiding them hundreds of miles down the Chaliyar River to Beypore port for shipbuilding.

Botanical Garden, Butterfly Park & Bio Trails

Medicinal Plant Conservatory: The surrounding 4 hectare arboretum cultivates rare Ayurvedic herbs, aromatic plants, and 50 native bird attracting tree species.

Butterfly Garden: Landscaped with nectar rich host plants, the outdoor garden attracts dozens of colorful butterfly species including the Southern Birdwing and Malabar Banded Peacock.
