Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary (celebrated internationally as the Kadalundi Vallikkunnu Community Reserve and India's first designated coastal mangrove community reserve), spreading across a cluster of scenic river islands where the sacred Kadalundi River discharges into the Arabian Sea just 35 km northwest of Malappuram town and 19 km south of Kozhikode in Kerala, is one of South India's most ecologically rich, scenic, and vital migratory wetland sanctuaries.

Declared in October 2007 as a protected Community Reserve spanning 1.5 square kilometers of estuarine mudflats, tidal creeks, and dense mangrove islands (Kandal kaadukal), this unique biological haven provides an indispensable winter foraging and wintering station for over 100 species of native birds and more than 60 species of trans continental migratory shorebirds traveling along the Central Asian Flyway.

It's the home of sprawling river mudflats teeming with crabs, mudskippers, and mollusks that sustain massive flocks of migratory Siberian sandpipers, whimbrels, turnstones, plovers, and seagulls, dense stands of Avicennia and Rhizophora mangrove forests, peaceful traditional country boat rides and kayaking safaris through silent tidal creeks operated by local community eco guides, the historic Kadalundi railway bridge viewpoint, elevated timber birdwatching watchtowers, and panoramic sunset horizons over the Arabian Sea.

Located in Vallikkunnu panchayat near Kadalundi Nagaram, it sits just 2 km from Kadalundi Railway Station (KDND), 10 km from Ferok, 35 km from Malappuram town, and 22 km from Calicut International Airport (CCJ), easily accessible by coastal trains, auto rickshaws, and local buses from Kozhikode and Parappanangadi.

The Central Asian Flyway & Migratory Avian Haven

Every autumn, thousands of long distance migrant birds fly over the Himalayas from Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe to winter in Kadalundi's nutrient rich tidal mudflats.

Ornithologists regularly record rare avian sightings including lesser sand plovers, black tailed godwits, redshanks, greenshanks, and Brahminy kites circling above the estuary.

Truth is, gliding silently in a wooden country boat through the mangrove canals while hundreds of sandpipers feed along the exposed sandbars is pure magic.
