Pazhayangadi Mosque

Pazhayangadi Mosque (celebrated across Kerala as Kondotty Pazhayangadi Palli and the Mughal architectural jewel of Malabar), situated in the historic Sufi township of Kondotty just 18 km northwest of Malappuram town in Kerala, is one of South India's most ancient, spiritually revered, and architecturally unique Islamic pilgrimage shrines.

Constructed over 500 years ago during the 16th century (circa 18th century reconstruction by revered Persian Sufi saint Shaykh Muhammad Shah, a direct descendant of the great Sufi master Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer), this majestic mosque is uniquely famous as one of the extremely rare mosques in South India constructed in the classical Indo Mughal architectural style, featuring an imposing white central dome (Qubba) rather than traditional Kerala gabled timber roofs.

It's the home of the sanctified tomb (Makam / Dargah) of Sufi saint Muhammad Shah who introduced the Qadiri Chishti Sufi tradition to Malabar, an exquisite octagonal central dome flanked by arched parapets and minarets with Persian style floral calligraphy, a large granite ablution tank (Hauz), and the world famous annual 6 day Kondotty Nercha celebrated every February/March, which draws hundreds of thousands of Hindu and Muslim devotees together in a historic display of secular communal harmony.

It represents a rich spiritual and cultural sanctuary where classical Mughal Persian Islamic architecture, deep Sufi mystic devotion, secular Malabar inter faith brotherhood, and peaceful inland trade history unite in Malappuram district.

The 500 Year Antiquity & Sufi Saint Muhammad Shah

In the 18th century, Shaykh Muhammad Shah migrated from Mumbai to Kondotty, establishing a Sufi hospice (Khanqah) that offered free spiritual guidance, medical healing, and food to all communities.

Honored by the Zamorin of Kozhikode and local chieftains, the saint supervised the construction of this grand domed mosque, fusing Mughal aesthetic grandeur with indigenous Malabar building techniques.

Rare Indo Mughal Dome (Qubba) Architecture

The White Qubba: Unlike traditional Malabar mosques that feature sloping clay tiled roofs resembling Kerala temples, Pazhayangadi showcases a grand hemispherical dome modeled on northern Indian sultanate mosques.

The Makam Dargah: Devotees visit the adjoining marble mausoleum of saint Muhammad Shah to pay homage, seek blessings, and offer fragrant rose water and incense.

The Grand Kondotty Nercha & Communal Harmony

The 6 Day Nercha (February/March): The premier annual festival commemorates the death anniversary (Urs) of Muhammad Shah with mass charity feeding, spiritual discourses, and devotional music.

Historic Hindu Muslim Unity: Traditionally, the first ceremonial procession (Varavu) to the mosque is led by the local Thattan (goldsmith) community, symbolizing centuries of unbreakable communal harmony in Kondotty.
