Kulamavu Dam

Kulamavu Dam (celebrated across India as the vital masonry gravity anchor of the legendary Idukki Hydroelectric Project triad alongside the Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam), situated across the deep Kilivallithodu mountain gorge in Kulamavu just 22 km west of Idukki town in Kerala, is one of the nation's most impressive, strategically vital, and scenic hydroelectric engineering monuments.

Constructed in 1976 with Canadian technical collaboration to impound the 33 square-kilometer common reservoir across the Kilivallithodu stream (a tributary of the Periyar River), this monumental concrete gravity structure spans 385 meters in crest length and rises to a formidable height of 100 meters, functioning as the western containment barrier that channels pressurized reservoir waters through an underground power tunnel to the subterranean Moolamattom Powerhouse 750 meters below in the valley floor.
