Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary (celebrated across India as the 77 square-kilometer tropical evergreen and semi evergreen wildlife haven cradled by the scenic 33 square-kilometer Idukki Arch Dam reservoir), situated in the Thodupuzha and Udumbanchola taluks just 12 km from Idukki town in Kerala, is one of the state's most ecologically rich, scenic, and pristine jungle reserves.

Formed in 1976 around the deep backwaters created by the monumental Idukki and Cheruthoni dams on the Periyar and Cheruthoni rivers, the sanctuary encompasses rolling hills rising from 450 meters to over 1,270 meters above sea level (crowned by the peak of Vanjikavala)—creating an isolated tropical wilderness surrounded on three sides by deep turquoise reservoir waters that act as a natural barrier protecting wild fauna from human encroachment.

It's the home of scenic boat safaris operated across the vast reservoir channels where visitors observe wild Asian elephant herds bathing on secluded lake islands, thriving populations of Indian gaurs (bison), sambar deer, barking deer, wild boars, jungle cats, Malabar giant squirrels, smooth coated otters, and elusive Indian leopards, an extraordinary avifaunal haven sheltering over 220 recorded bird species (including the Great Indian Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Osprey, Black Eagle, and Kingfisher), dense canopies of tropical evergreen trees such as Terminalia, Rosewood, and White Pine, natural crocodile breeding waters, eco trekking trails through moist deciduous buffer zones, and the Forest Department eco tourism interpretation center at Vellappara.

It represents a rich wilderness, water safari, and conservation sanctuary where high altitude Western Ghats rainforest preservation, scenic reservoir boating safaris, wild elephant island photography, and deep jungle peace unite in Idukki district.

Located with its main Forest Department entrance at Vellappara near Painavu / Cheruthoni, it sits just 12 km from Idukki Arch Dam, 15 km from Kattappana, 48 km from Munnar, 55 km from Thekkady, 110 km from Kottayam Railway Station (KTYM), and 115 km from Cochin International Airport (COK), easily accessible by state KSRTC buses, tourist cabs, and private vehicles.
