Sri Pratap Singh Museum

Situated gracefully along the leafy banks of the Jhelum River in the historic Lal Mandi quarter of Srinagar, the Sri Pratap Singh Museum (commonly known as the SPS Museum) is the premier archaeological and cultural repository of Jammu And Kashmir. Established in 1898 by Maharaja Pratap Singh of the Dogra dynasty, this venerable institution preserves over two thousand years of Kashmiri artistic, numismatic, and ethnographic heritage.

Truth is, while most visitors spend their time touring gardens and houseboats, stepping into the SPS Museum reveals the deep cosmopolitan history of ancient Kashmir. Long before modern boundaries, the valley was a vibrant meeting point where Greco Roman Gandharan sculpture, Central Asian motifs, Kashmiri Shaivism, and Persian calligraphy harmoniously intersected.

The museum is housed in a modern climate controlled heritage complex, having transitioned from the historic royal guest palace building. Its galleries safeguard over 80,000 rare antiquities including 3rd century Harwan terracotta tiles, medieval bronze sculptures from Gilgit, royal Dogra armory, and exquisitely preserved 17th century Pashmina shawls. Exploring the museum pairs naturally with heritage walks in Old Srinagar and visits to Shankaracharya Temple and Jama Masjid.

Harwan Terracotta and Buddhist Sculptures

The archaeological section features the celebrated Harwan molded terracotta tiles (dated between 3rd and 4th century AD), unearthed from an ancient Buddhist monastery near Srinagar. The tiles depict Central Asian musicians with stringed instruments, Kushan nobles in tunic coats, and floral geometric borders.

The sculpture gallery exhibits grand green chlorite stone carvings of Surya (the Sun God), Lord Vishnu in his four headed Vaikuntha Chaturmurti form, and crowned bronze statues of Avalokiteshvara recovered from Gilgit and Avantipur temple ruins before heading toward Hazratbal Mosque.

Kashmiri Textiles, Manuscripts, and Royal Armory

The decorative arts gallery showcases authentic antique Kani shawls and Amli needlework Pashmina shawls woven with pure Tibetan ibex wool. The legendary labyrinthine Paisley (Ambi) patterns reflect centuries of master weaving in old Srinagar bazaars.

The manuscript and numismatic section preserves birch bark (Bhojpatra) and Kashmiri paper manuscripts inscribed in ancient Sharda, Persian, and Sanskrit scripts. Rare silver and gold coins minted by Indo Greek rulers, Kushan kings, Mughal emperors, and Sikh governors chronicle the shifting political eras of the valley before visiting Pari Mahal.

Visiting Hours, Entry Fees, and Location

The Sri Pratap Singh Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM (closed on Mondays and designated government holidays). Entry tickets cost approximately 20 rupees for Indian nationals and 50 rupees for foreign visitors.

Located in Lal Mandi just across the Jhelum pedestrian footbridge from the central Residency Road and Lal Chowk (1.5 km), the museum is easily accessible on foot or by auto rickshaw. Plan for about 1.5 hours to tour the thematic galleries comfortably before taking an afternoon Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
