Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid stands right in the middle of Nowhatta, the historic heart of downtown Srinagar. Sultan Sikandar Shah Kashmiri commissioned this grand monument back in 1394 CE, with subsequent expansions designed by his celebrated son, Sultan Zain ul Abidin. Unlike typical domed stone mosques found across northern India, this historic sanctuary showcases authentic Kashmiri wooden architecture inspired by Indo Saracenic and traditional pagoda styles. Four massive halls face a quiet central courtyard, creating an expansive prayer arena capable of welcoming more than 33,000 worshippers during congregational prayers.

The defining architectural hallmark of the mosque is its monumental colonnade of 378 individual deodar cedar pillars. Each soaring wooden pillar is carved from a single whole Himalayan cedar trunk, rising up to fifty feet towards lofty tiered roofs and decorative wooden ceilings. Walking between these dark polished timber columns gives you an immediate sense of grandeur, scale, and deep calmness. The spacious quadrangle features a central fountain pool where visitors perform ablutions under open mountain skies framed by towering chinar trees.

The mosque survived several major fires across past centuries and was repeatedly restored by Mughal emperors, including Jahangir and Aurangzeb, after extensive damage. Each successive restoration faithfully retained the original square floor plan and distinct timber construction techniques established during the Shahmiri dynasty. The central prayer niche features fine Islamic calligraphy carved directly into aged Kashmiri walnut and stone panels, reflecting deep regional artisanship and centuries of refined devotional craft.

Visiting Hours & Practical Etiquette Guidelines

The monument welcomes travelers every day from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM outside designated congregational prayer times. Entry is completely free for all domestic and international visitors. Modest dress covering arms and legs is required, and headscarves are provided at the entrance gates if needed. Footwear must be deposited at the outer entrance counters before stepping onto the courtyard flags, and quiet decorum is maintained throughout the interior colonnades.
