Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden

Sprawling across thirty hectares along the gentle foothills of the Zabarwan range overlooking Dal Lake in Srinagar, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden (formerly known as Siraj Bagh) is the largest tulip garden in Asia. Opened in 2007 to boost spring floriculture and tourism in Jammu And Kashmir, this botanical spectacle showcases over 1.5 million tulips comprising more than 68 distinct varieties imported from the Netherlands and cultivated by expert Kashmiri horticulturists.

Truth is, entering the garden during the annual spring Tulip Festival is like walking into a living rainbow. The landscape is designed in a stepped terraced pattern with seven expansive levels gently sloping toward Dal Lake, framed by snow dusted Himalayan peaks in the background.

Vibrant ribbons of crimson, golden yellow, velvety violet, pure white, and striped bicolored tulips stretch in endless parallel rows. In addition to tulips, the garden features fragrant hyacinths, daffodils, narcissus, ranunculus, and flowering cherry blossoms. Visiting the garden forms an essential spring highlight paired with Pari Mahal and Nishat Bagh.

The Annual Kashmir Tulip Festival and Cultural Exhibits

Every year from late March to late April, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department hosts the grand Tulip Festival. The month long celebration brings traditional Kashmiri folk musicians playing the rabab and santur, live Rouf dancers in embroidered pherans, and food stalls serving hot Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, and saffron Kahwa tea.

Local artisan kiosks display authentic Kashmiri handicrafts, including hand knotted Pashmina shawls, walnut wood carvings, papier mache artifacts, and pure saffron filaments before heading toward Hazratbal Mosque.

Garden Layout, Water Channels, and Photography

The garden layout incorporates modern drip irrigation networks and gently bubbling stone fountains that mimic classical Mughal Charbagh water channels without disturbing delicate root bulbs.

Mind you, early morning between 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM offers the softest natural lighting for macro flower photography and capturing dew drops glistening on fresh petals. The gentle mountain slope ensures that photos capture both the vast floral carpets and the dramatic mountain ridges of Zabarwan before traveling to Shankaracharya Temple.

Visiting Hours, Ticket Prices, and Practical Tips

The Tulip Garden operates during its annual bloom window (typically late March to late April) daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Entry tickets cost approximately 60 rupees for adults and 25 rupees for children, available at the on site ticketing counters or online.

Located along Boulevard Road roughly 9 km from Lal Chowk city center, the garden is easily accessible via taxi, auto rickshaw, or local tourist buses. Plan for roughly 2 to 3 hours to stroll through the terraces comfortably before taking a relaxing afternoon Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
