Shankaracharya Temple

Perched high atop the solitary volcanic summit of Gopadari Hill (Takht e Suleiman) at an altitude of 1,100 feet above the valley floor in Srinagar, the ancient Shankaracharya Temple (historically known as the Jyesthesvara Temple) is the oldest surviving stone temple in Jammu And Kashmir. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this octagonal granite sanctuary dates back originally to around 200 BC during the reign of King Jalauka (son of Emperor Ashoka), with the present stone superstructure renovated in the 9th century by King Gopaditya.

Truth is, the spiritual aura at the summit is unforgettable. In the early 9th century, the great philosopher and theologian Adi Shankaracharya visited Kashmir, stayed on this very hillock, and composed his celebrated hymn Saundarya Lahari after attaining profound spiritual realizations on the union of Shiva and Shakti.

The temple rests on an imposing octagonal stone plinth 20 feet high, accessible via a flight of 243 smoothly carved stone steps. The dark sanctum sanctorum enshrines a revered Shiva Linga encircled by a coiled serpent, attended by resident Shaivite priests. Reaching the terrace rewards pilgrims with sweeping 360 degree panoramic views across Dal Lake, the Jhelum River loops, and the snow capped Pir Panjal peaks. Visiting the shrine pairs naturally with Pari Mahal and Hazratbal Mosque.

Architectural Grandeur and Persian Inscriptions

The architecture of Shankaracharya Temple reflects early Kashmiri stone masonry, characterized by massive ashlar limestone blocks assembled without mortar. The square sanctum features a circular vaulted stone ceiling supported by four octagonal pillars.

Fascinatingly, historical Persian inscriptions etched onto the interior pillars record repairs undertaken during the Mughal era under Emperor Shah Jahan in 1644 AD, recording the shrine as the Throne of Solomon (Takht e Suleiman). Below the main temple terrace lies a quiet natural rock cave where Adi Shankara engaged in deep tapasya (meditation) before visiting Nishat Bagh.

The 243 Steps Climb and Forest Wildlife

The journey begins with a 5.5 km drive up the winding Shankaracharya Hill forest road from Boulevard Road (near Dalgate), winding through dense deodar, pine, and wild almond woodlands managed by the state forest department.

At the motorable road head, devotees climb the 243 stone steps fitted with sturdy iron handrails. Benches are provided at regular intervals, allowing travelers to catch their breath while enjoying aerial vistas of Shikara boats gliding on Dal Lake before touring Jama Masjid.

Darshan Timings, Security Protocol, and Visitor Advice

Shankaracharya Temple is open daily for darshan from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM (vehicular entry up the hill road is regulated and typically closes by 5:00 PM for security screening). Entry is completely free for all devotees.

Mind you, strict security screening operates at the road checkpoint and base steps. Mobile phones, smartwatches, cameras, power banks, and leather bags are strictly prohibited inside the temple premises and must be left in your vehicle.
