Pari Mahal

Perched high along the spur of the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking the glistening waters of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Pari Mahal (the Palace of Fairies) stands as a unique architectural jewel among the Mughal monuments of Jammu And Kashmir. Built in the mid seventeenth century around 1650 AD by Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh (the erudite eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan), this six tiered terraced garden functioned as an astronomical observatory and center of Sufi learning.

Truth is, while other Mughal pleasure gardens in Kashmir were designed primarily for relaxation with gushing water fountains, Pari Mahal was conceived as an intellectual and spiritual retreat. Prince Dara Shikoh dedicated the palace to his spiritual mentor and tutor, Mulla Shah Badakhshi, creating an open air academy where royal scholars studied celestial navigation, Persian astronomy, and mystical philosophy.

The monument features six descending garden terraces built with local grey rubble stone and lime mortar, linked by elegant stone steps, arched vaulted corridors, and viewing pavilions. Standing on the uppermost terrace at sunset offers arguably the finest panoramic view in Kashmir, with the entirety of Dal Lake, the floating vegetable gardens, and the city skyline spread out below you. It pairs effortlessly with visits to Nishat Bagh and Tulip Garden.

Architectural Layout of the Six Terraces

Each of the six terraces at Pari Mahal showcases distinct architectural details. The uppermost terrace features the ruins of two corner guard towers (baradaris) and a central masonry tank fed by natural mountain spring aquifers through subterranean clay conduits.

The lower terraces are planted with neatly manicured rose gardens, blooming almond and apricot trees, and fragrant lavender beds. Arched niches carved into the retaining stone walls were originally used to place oil lamps that illuminated the hillside gardens at night before traveling to Shankaracharya Temple.

Astronomical Heritage and Dara Shikoh Legacy

Historical records indicate that before Dara Shikoh built the palace, the hillside was the site of a ruined Buddhist monastery dating back to the Kushan period. Dara Shikoh synthesized this historic sanctuary into an intellectual laboratory, translating ancient Sanskrit Upanishads into Persian (Sirr e Akbar) and calculating planetary orbits.

The peaceful ambiance continues to draw artists, writers, and historians. The clear high altitude mountain air and undisturbed horizon made Pari Mahal the ideal vantage point for medieval stargazers charting constellations over the Kashmir Valley before heading toward Hazratbal Mosque.

Visiting Hours, Ticket Prices, and Practical Information

Pari Mahal is open daily from 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM throughout the tourist season. Entry tickets cost approximately 25 rupees for Indian adults and 10 rupees for children, bookable at the entrance gate or via the J&K Tourism online portal.

The monument is located about 11 km from Lal Chowk city center, accessible via a winding asphalt road past Cheshma Shahi and the Royal Springs Golf Course. Plan for roughly 60 to 90 minutes to stroll through the terraces and capture golden hour photos of Dal Lake before visiting Tulip Garden.
