Jhula Devi Temple

Jhula Devi Temple is a revered 8th century hill shrine situated at Chaubatia, about 7 kilometers from Ranikhet. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, the deity is affectionately worshipped sitting upon a wooden cradle or swing (jhula), from which the temple derives its name.

According to ancient regional lore, local shepherds and villagers faced frequent attacks by man eating leopards and wild animals roaming the dense Kumaon forests. Praying for divine protection, Goddess Durga appeared in a dream to a local shepherd, directing him to unearth an ancient idol and seat her upon a wooden swing to protect the valley.

Thousands of Brass Bells and Sacred Wishes

The temple complex presents a striking sight, decorated with thousands of hanging brass bells tied to railings, walls, and pillars across the entire courtyard. Devotees firmly believe that any wish made with a pure heart before Jhula Devi is granted, after which worshippers return to tie a brass bell in gratitude.

The gentle mountain breezes create a continuous soothing symphony of chiming bells echoing through the surrounding deodar and pine groves. A separate shrine dedicated to Lord Rama sits directly opposite the main courtyard.

Situated on the scenic route toward Chaubatia orchards from Ranikhet, Jhula Devi Temple is an essential spiritual pilgrimage site across Uttarakhand.
