Ranikhet is one such place which, despite having a regular military interference, is a full fledged tourist destination. It is situated in the Almora district of the state of Uttarakhand. the pristine environment and amazing flora give Ranikhet a queen like status among the other hill stations of Uttarakhand. Constructed in 1903 by the British administration as the primary water supply for the cantonment, Bhalu Dam is an artificial lake nestled inside deep pine and oak woods 3 km below Chaubatia. Accessible via a scenic 3 km downhill forest trek, it is a peaceful spot for wilderness picnics and bird photography.
Located 8 km from Ranikhet, Tarikhet was an active center during India's independence movement. It features Gandhi Kuti, the historic wooden cottage where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his tour of Kumaon in 1929, along with the ancient Goljyu Devta Temple.
