Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple

Kyunkaleshwar Mahadev Temple is a historic 8th century stone temple consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya, built on a pine forested hill spur overlooking the Alaknanda river valley in Pauri, Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of approximately 1,750 meters (5,740 feet), this ancient Shaivite sanctuary is widely considered the oldest and most architecturally significant shrine in Pauri town.

Exhibiting classical Katyuri and Nagara stone architectural styles, the temple sanctum houses an ancient self manifested (Swayambhu) Shivling alongside intricately carved stone idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya, and an adjacent shrine dedicated to Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Goddess Sita. A paved stone flight of roughly 120 steps leads up through fragrant oak, pine, and rhododendron woods. The temple terrace offers sweeping panoramic views of the Alaknanda river winding towards Srinagar and snow capped Himalayan giants including Chaukhamba and Trishul.
