Cloud's End, marking the geographical western frontier and tranquil wilderness boundary of Mussoorie at an elevation of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) in Uttarakhand, stands as the hill station's most secluded, pristine, and historically evocative forest estate.
Established in 1838 by British military officer Major Swetenham as one of the original four colonial bungalows built in Mussoorie, this 2,000 acre private estate of virgin deodar, oak, and blue pine forest offers complete isolation from the bustling commercial markets of Mall Road.
It's the home of the heritage 1838 Anglo Indian log house bungalow decorated with antique teak furniture and stone fireplaces, direct forest hiking gateways into the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, scenic trails ascending to the hilltop Jwala Devi Temple on Benog Tibba, and striking panoramas dropping into the Aglar River valley and Yamuna gorge.
It represents a rich Himalayan sanctuary where early 19th century colonial heritage, whispering deodar woods, rich Himalayan birdwatching, and undisturbed mountain tranquility unite at the edge of the Queen of Hills.
Located in the Hathipaon forest belt just 7 km west of Library Chowk on Mussoorie Mall Road, it sits 38 km from Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) and 60 km from Dehradun Jolly Grant Airport (DED), easily reached by private taxi, self drive car, or an invigorating mountain hike.
In the 1830s, Major Swetenham fell in love with this secluded forest ridge overlooking the endless rolling Himalayan hills and constructed a classic stone and-timber British homestead.
Preserved through generations, the heritage bungalow retains its classic gabled roofs, wide wooden verandas, vintage European clocks, brass oil lamps, and hand carved fireplaces that have warmed travelers for nearly two centuries.
Truth is, the name "Cloud's End" was inspired by the dramatic monsoon clouds that roll up from the Yamuna valley and come to a peaceful halt right along this high forested ridge.
Untouched Cedar Wilderness: The estate is blanketed by 2,000 acres of protected oak, rhododendron, and Himalayan deodar cedar trees carpeted with wild ferns and pine needles.
Benog Sanctuary Gateway: Cloud's End is the natural trailhead for exploring the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, a sanctuary for Himalayan goral (mountain goats), barking deer, red foxes, and rare birds like the White Crested Laughingthrush and Koklass Pheasant.
Jwala Devi (Benog Tibba) Trek: An exhilarating 2 kilometer forest trail climbs from Cloud's End through thick pine canopies to the 2,104 meter summit of Benog Tibba, crowned by an ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Durga.
Sunset Panoramas: From the rocky viewpoints around Cloud's End, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the glistening Aglar River below, with golden evening light illuminating the distant snow peaks of Bunderpoonch, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba.
After exploring the tranquil woods of Cloud's End, visit the historic Sir George Everest House nearby at Hathipaon, admire the floral displays of Company Garden, or enjoy the lively cafes along Mall Road in Mussoorie.
