The Tribal Heritage Museum (also known as Masterji's Museum) is a fascinating private cultural repository founded by retired school principal Dr. S.S. Pangti in Nansum village, roughly 2 km from Munsiyari town. Dedicated to preserving the rich ancestral customs, trans Himalayan trade history, and folk traditions of the indigenous Shauka (Bhotia) community, this private museum is a cultural treasure in Johar Valley.
Inside the traditional timber house, visitors can examine rare historical artifacts from the Indo Tibetan barter trade before 1962, including yak leather bags, salt measuring scales, brass utensils, antique jewellery, wooden currency, and handwoven woolen carpets (thulma and chutka). Travelers exploring Uttarakhand receive fascinating personal narrations from the founder about life on the ancient trade passes like Lipulekh and Unta Dhura.
Truth is, listening to authentic stories of salt caravans and Tibetan marts is deeply captivating. The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a nominal entry contribution of ?20 per person.
