Maheshwari Kund (also locally known as Mehsar Kund) is a mythological natural pond tucked among dense oak, pine, and rhododendron forests roughly 2.5 km from Munsiyari town. According to ancient local folklore, a divine serpent (Yakshi) lived in this serene pond and fell in love with a local village maiden; when villagers dried the pond out of anger, a severe curse brought drought upon Munsiyari until the villagers apologized and restored the sacred waters.
Today, the pristine lake is reached via an exhilarating 1.5 km uphill nature walk starting from the main road near Sarmoli village. Trekkers and nature lovers touring eastern Uttarakhand are rewarded with stunning mirror reflections of the towering Panchachuli peaks and lush alpine meadows surrounding the water edge.
Truth is, the tranquil atmosphere and chirping forest birds make this short trek deeply therapeutic. The lake trail is accessible daily during daylight hours with zero admission fees.
