Machhi Tal

Located in a tranquil woodland glade roughly 9 kilometers from the hill town of Gwaldam in Chamoli district, Machhi Tal (Fish Lake) is a historic freshwater reservoir in Uttarakhand. Created in 1928 during the British Raj as a specialized breeding ground for Himalayan Golden Mahseer and freshwater carp, this scenic body of water lies bordered by ancient deodar, rhododendron, and blue pine forests.

Although modern fish breeding operations have transitioned to government state hatcheries nearby, the lake remains a peaceful ecological haven where schools of native fish swim near the water surface. Surrounding grassy banks and moss covered stone embankments provide idyllic spots for quiet family picnics and nature relaxation.

The approach route passes through flourishing apple and plum orchards and terraced tea gardens that characterize the Gwaldam countryside. Walking trails around the lake perimeter offer tranquil birdwatching opportunities with sights of laughing thrushes, Himalayan bulbuls, and flycatchers.
