Perched precipitously on a narrow rocky summit at an elevation of 2,260 meters (7,414 feet) on the ridge dividing Garhwal and Kumaon, Badhangarhi Temple is an ancient fortress temple situated roughly 8 kilometers from Gwaldam in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Built in the twelfth century by the Katyuri dynasty rulers, the site served as one of the fifty two strategic military hill forts (Badhan Garh) of ancient Garhwal.
The temple complex is dedicated to Goddess Dakshina Kali on one side of the mountain crest and Lord Shiva on the opposite peak. Devotees believe the warrior goddess fiercely defended the mountain kingdom against invading forces from the Katyur valley.
Reaching the shrine requires a steep 3.5 kilometer trekking trail starting from Taal village through dense oak and scarlet rhododendron forests. The summit ridge offers an astonishing 360 degree panorama of the snow laden Trishul peak, Nanda Ghunti, and the deep turquoise Pindar and Katyur river valleys below.
