About Gwalnaag

Perched high along a pine and oak forested ridge roughly 3 kilometers uphill from the quiet border town of Gwaldam in Chamoli district, Gwalnaag is a renowned scenic viewpoint in Uttarakhand. Resting at an altitude of 1,950 meters on the cultural threshold dividing the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, this vantage point offers commanding unobstructed views of the Pindar river valley and the snowclad Himalayan skyline.

Gwalnaag Gwaldam Chamoli

The summit is dedicated to Gwalnaag (Lord of the Serpents), marked by an ancient folk temple where local shepherds and villagers pray for the protection of their livestock and alpine pastures. Devotees gather here during regional festivals to offer milk, clarified butter, and brass tridents.

On clear mornings, visitors are treated to striking panoramic vistas of Mount Trishul (7,120m), Nanda Ghunti, and the Chaukhamba massif glowing golden in the dawn sun. A gentle 45 minute uphill walking trail through pine fragrant forests makes Gwalnaag a favorite spot for day hikers and nature photographers.
