Bhimtal Lake is the largest natural body of water across the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Spanning over 48 hectares at an altitude of 1,370 meters, this C shaped freshwater lake exceeds neighboring Nainital Lake in surface expanse.
The lake owes its creation to complex tectonic faulting across the Lesser Himalayas, while Hindu tradition links it to Bhima of the Mahabharata who struck the ground with his mace to create a water reservoir for his thirsty brothers.
