Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple sits gracefully upon the masonry embankment of Bhimtal Lake. This ancient shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva and forms the cultural cornerstone of the entire valley.
According to epic lore, Bhima, the strongest of the Pandava brothers, performed intense penance here during the exile period. Delighted by his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and manifested as the sacred lingam, inspiring the creation of the temple and lake.
The present stone edifice was commissioned during the seventeenth century by Raja Baz Bahadur of the Chand dynasty of Kumaon. It exhibits classic regional Nagara temple styling with carved wooden doorways, a central sanctum, and a stone shikhara tower.
The temple is positioned right beside the historic dam wall constructed by British engineers in 1883. Devotees often combine a spiritual visit to the sanctum with peaceful strolls along the tree lined lake promenade.
