Kallanai Dam

Kallanai Dam (celebrated globally as the Grand Anicut, recognized internationally by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage / ICID as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure and the fourth oldest water diversion water dam structure in the world still in active operational use), situated across the sacred River Cauvery (Kaveri) just 15 km east of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, is one of humanity's greatest hydraulic engineering and civil architectural triumphs.

King Karikala Cholan devised an ingenious method of laying massive unhewn granite stones across the raging river, allowing the rushing current to wash silt from under the stones until they settled firmly into the riverbed.

Successive layers of stones were stacked with a unique natural adhesive clay, creating a curved weir that has withstood catastrophic monsoon floods for over twenty continuous centuries.
